Most staffs work through three questions in order. First, can the player produce at our level — which means reading box-score production against the strength of schedule they faced, not just raw averages. Second, do they fit our system, since a high-usage isolation scorer and a low-usage spot-up shooter can post identical efficiency numbers and suit completely different offenses. Third, is the sample trustworthy — 40 strong minutes is not a season. The bottleneck is rarely finding stats; it is comparing 2,300 players on all three questions before rival programs make their calls.
Scheme fit measures how well a player's statistical profile matches what a specific system asks of them, rather than how good they are in the abstract. A national ranking answers 'who is the best player available.' Scheme fit answers 'who is the best player for us.' Those give different answers constantly: a rim-running big who thrives in transition may grade out poorly in a slow, half-court offense, while a pack-line defense values different defensive stats than a switching scheme. Ranking a transfer pool by fit rather than by consensus talent is what surfaces players other programs overlook.
The common definition is a player whose fit for your system is far better than their national ranking suggests — the consensus ranking rewards production at a high-major program, while your system needs a specific skill a mid- or low-major player supplies at a fraction of the recruiting competition. Identifying one means comparing a system-specific fit score against an independent market ranking; the gap between the two is the signal. Portal IQ flags that gap automatically and measures it against a licensed third-party rank rather than its own number, so the comparison stays honest. What that gap has actually been shown to predict is worth being precise about: we backtested it against 1,111 real spring-2025 transfers, and flagged players went on to a much bigger role at their next school — a median of roughly eight more minutes per game — but the gap did not predict that a player would improve statistically. We label it a role-and-opportunity signal for that reason rather than claiming it finds undervalued talent.
Season averages hide variance completely: a player scoring 14 a game on 6-and-22 nights is a different recruiting decision than one scoring 14 every night. Game logs are what separate them — per-game production joined to who the opponent was, so you can see whether the numbers held up against quality competition or came against the weakest teams on the schedule. Sample size matters too: a percentage built on 20 attempts should not be trusted like one built on 200, which is why serious models shrink small samples toward positional norms instead of taking them at face value.
No single stat carries an evaluation, which is why composites exist. Portal IQ uses 16: true shooting, three-point, free-throw and two-point percentages for scoring efficiency; assist and turnover rates for ball value; usage and minutes for role and opportunity; offensive and defensive rebound rates; steal and block rates plus defensive rating for defense; and points per game, PER and offensive rating for production. The weighting matters more than the list — the same 16 numbers produce very different rankings depending on what a system prioritizes, which is the entire argument for scoring fit per program rather than publishing one universal ranking.
